Unused B/W photo postcard. Picture of a burning building, believed to be the Gillette Garage operated by Cliff Marquiss which burned in 9/7/1917. 3 open topped cars, parked in front of Wyo. House & Photos, looking south Taken from the Gillette News Sept. 7, 1917 "Gillette Garage Destroyed By Flames of Unknown Origin At about 2:00 o'clock, this, Thursday afternoon fire was discovered in the Gillette Garage and within a very short time the building lay a complete mass of ruins. The origin of the fire is not known. The first intimation of a fire was discovered by workmen in the back and it is presumed to have originated in the vulcanizing room. The loss will be a very heavy one F C Marquiss, proprietor of the garage as he carried a very large stock of auto supplies, and the fire was so quick and fierce that but very little was saved other than a part of the stock of tires stored in the basement. He had just finished storing a car load of Fords, only two of which were saved, and besides these, several cars that were in storage, together with a number that were being repaired were lost. The volunteers were out in full force and by hard work, confined the flames to the one building, although for a time it appeared as though the Grandma Tantum residence would be destroyed, but fortunately it was saved." |
