Summary |
Book about the blizzard of 1949 that came south from Canada, impacting Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota. The book describes a storm on November 18, 1948, followed by a lull in which people attempted to continue their daily routines despite the snow drifts, and then the blizzard of 1949 that began on January 2. The author describes the livestock and people that died in the blizzard, small relief efforts by various pilots and locomotoves, and the massive rescue operation called "Operation Snowbound" that was put in motion by President Truman on January 24, 1949 and carried out by the U.S. Fifth Army. This relief effort continued until April 1949. There are two maps of the areas that were impacted by the storm, as well as several photographs of the impact on people, roads, houses, airplanes, locomotives, and livestock. |
